Obituary of Celestine Monroe

Winston-Salem-Celestine Mitchell Monroe, 86, went home to be with the Lord on July 3, 2013. Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held 10:00AM Monday July 8, 2013 at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel. Committal Services will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. A native of Forsyth County, she was the daughter of the late Bessie Williams and William David Hairston, Sr. She was retired from Bowman Gray Medical School. She was a member of Gethsemane Hope Baptist Church where she served as a choir member and on the Missionary Board. She was preceded in death by husband’s Anthony Mitchell and James Monroe, sisters Gwendolyn and Betty Jean, brothers William “Bill” David Hairston, Jr. and Lee Eldridge Hairston. Survivors include her daughters Antoinette C. Sawyer and Clifton of Kernersville, and Jo Reneé Carr and William of Burlington; son Anthony “Slick” Mitchell of Winston-Salem; brother Dr. James R. Hairston of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren Russell Lee Mitchell, Rochelle Reneé Mitchell, and Randy Sawyer; God Daughter Evette Wilson; step-son James Ray Monroe; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. The family will visit with friends from 9AM until time for the service at the funeral home on Monday.
