Obituary of Walter Wilson

Walkertown-Walter Holt Wilson, 82, passed away November 6, 2012 at his residence. Graveside Funeral Services celebrating his life will be held 3:00PM Friday, November 9, 2012 at Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Sybil Parks officiating. The family will visit with friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. A native of West Virginia, he was the son of the late Gladys Boggs and Walter Alderson Wilson. He was a longtime member of Love's United Methodist Church. Walt was a member of the United Methodist Men, served as the president for 20 years, and in 1991 was honored as a Life Member. He served his church in a number of capacities including longtime teacher for the Lillie Young Sunday School Class, Sunday School Superintendant, Chairman of the Missions committee, Chairman of the 1991 Bicentennial Celebration, and was a recipient of the 1991 Laity Award. He served on a committee for the Asbury Trail, a delegate at Lake Junaluska, and on the board of Elk Shoals. He was a member of Walkertown Lions Club where he served as President and Secretary and was a recipient of the Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellow and Jack Stickley awards. He served as Cabinet Secretary for Lions State District 31-D in 1999-2000. Walt served his community in several capacities through the years. He was President of Walkertown Friends of the Library, Walkertown Community Arts Committee, and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Winston-Salem Arts Council. He was married to the late Marjorie Anne Zinn in 1951, who died August 25, 2012. At the time, he was employed as a Professional Scouter for the Boy Scouts of America. For fifteen years, he served in the Buckskin Council, West Virginia; Blue Ridge Council, Virginia, and in the Old Hickory Council of Winston-Salem. He later joined Hanes Knitwear as Training and Personnel manager for 7 years, and retired from Leggett & Platt Southeastern Group as Director of Personnel and Training after 15 years of service. During his career, he taught at Forsyth Technical Community College and Davidson Community College in their Evening Management program. Survivors include daughters, Debbie Lesley of Salisbury, Kathy Lambe and her husband Clarence of Kernersville, Mary Hutchins and her husband Wesley of Walkertown; son, Walter "Chip" Wilson and his wife Kathy of Kernersville; grandchildren, Blair, Erin and Ryan Lesley, Christopher and Zachary Wilson, Cameron Lambe, and Mallory and Reid Hutchins; great-granddaughter Kayla Wilson and niece Terry Carter and nephew Jeff Beard of Baltimore, Maryland. Memorials are asked to be made to Love's United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America/Old Hickory Council, or the Walkertown Lions Club. Service Information
