Obituary of Henry Decker

Biography Henry (Hank) James Decker, Jr., passed away on February 8, 2013, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Services to celebrate Hank's life will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Irving Park United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. The Reverend Brian Allen will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Born on March 10, 1927, in Nashville, Tennessee, Hank was the only child of Henry James Decker and Aneita Moorefield Decker. In June of 1945, Hank graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia, and was immediately called into active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Upon discharge, Hank pursued a bachelor's degree at the University of Richmond where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. After graduation, Hank trained in his father's independent adjuster firm. In 1950, Hank joined Pennsylvania National Insurance Company in Richmond. In 1966, he was transferred to Greensboro as assistant manager of the claim office there. He remained in that position until he was named regional claim manager in 1974. He received his CPCU designation in 1973. Very active in both his field and the community, he held various offices in the N.C. Adjusters Association including the presidency in 1975, served as the director of the N.C. Insurance Education Foundation, and was the secretary-treasurer of the Greensboro Claim Managers Council. He retired in 1991 after 41 years of service. Hank was also a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite and Shrine, the Greensboro Elks Club, and an active member of Irving Park United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, deep-sea fishing, and golf. He played with the Greensboro Super Seniors for many years. An avid sports fan, he loved the Richmond Spiders and adopted the Tar Heels after moving to Greensboro. Hank was a proud husband, father, and grandfather, and enjoyed time spent with family. Hank is survived by his wife of 58 years Charlotte Houchins Decker; children Henry J. Decker, III and wife Gina; Susan Decker Murphy; grandchildren Michael Murphy, Sarah Murphy, and Courtney Decker.
