Obituary of Thomas Leary

Thomas J. Leary, 84, died Wednesday at Whitestone Masonic Home after years of failing health. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday October 16, 2010 at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Chapel, 300 West Wendover Avenue. Please bring one flower with you from the garden or beside the road to participate in the ceremony of remembrance. Tom served in the infantry during World War II. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a purple heart. After serving his country he earned a bachelors degree at Northeastern University in Boston, and a Masters and Ph. D in economics at Ohio State University. He taught economics for the University of Maryland's overseas program in France and Germany, at his alma mater Northeastern University, and, after several years doing research for the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. he was an associate professor of economics at UNCG from 1968 to 1988. He held the Kathleen Price Bryan Chair in Economics and authored books and articles on consumer economics, being a frequent contributor to the op ed pages of The News and Record. Survivors are Lucy Leary, his wife of 54 years, his daughter Beverly Winfield (Simon) of Scotland, UK, his son Marty Leary and wife Ann Long, and three grandchildren: Heather and Amy Winfield and Jon Long-Leary, sisters Betty and Marie Leary of Somerville, Mass.
