Mrs. McGarity was born in Johnstown, PA, and spent her formative years there and in Pittsburgh, PA. In early 1944, she volunteered for and was accepted into the American Red Cross volunteer Nurse's Aide service. Once completing training she performed most of her service at the Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh, and served until late 1945. Her mother was born in England. Mrs. McGarity moved to Greensboro, NC in 1967. In her younger years she was active in the Garden Club, a long time member of Green Valley Pool, and a regular lap swimmer well into her 60's. Mrs. McGarity was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years in 1977, and by a son in 1974, having never recovered from the latter's tragic death at age 20. She is survived by her other son Leonard McGarity of Florida, a loving daughter in law, and two wonderful grand children. A private interment is planned. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
