GREENSBORO ' Hubert Howard Hackney, 87, of Greensboro, N.C., died on Sunday, March 8, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the sanctuary of Guilford Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was retired from ownership of his business, Fabristeel Corp., which he bought in 1952, and owned and managed until his retirement. He was a North Carolina native, born to Jack and Lillie Hackney in 1922, graduated from Guilford High School, and served his country during World War II employed in the research department of Douglas Aircraft, Los Angeles, California, where he was honored by that company for contributions made by him personally to the company. He married his wife, Dorothy, and returned from California with his considerable technical skills, working honorably and effectively in technical areas in the local and national business community all the rest of his life, before and after he purchased the company which hired him. When asked to do so, he assisted other businessmen in financial need, and merely with a 'handshake.' He was an inventor, among other things, patenting the "Hackney Auto," for children. He loved his family, and earlier in his life, when his health permitted it, he especially enjoyed traveling and riding one or another of his beloved 'Goldwing' motorcycles. He was a lifelong member of Guilford Baptist Church, and as a young boy, assisted his father, Jack Hackney, to build the original structure of the church which preceded the present building. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Belie Hackney; his children, Linda, Suzanne, and Barry; nine grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John. Visitation with the family will be from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. Dinner will be served in the fellowship hall of the church for family and friends at 5:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Guilford Baptist Church, 5904 W. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27409 or to Greensboro Hospice & Palliative Care, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27408. Lamberth-Troxler Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the Hackney Family.
