Obituary of Rucker Crowder

Greensboro, NC Mr. Rucker Wesley Crowder, 93 of Greensboro went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 20, 2009 with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Monday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church by Rev. Ben Shepherd and Dr. Charles Adams officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Rucker was born on October 14, 1916 in Lee County the son of Robert Wesley and Eva Dixon Crowder. He had been an active member at Rehobeth United Methodist Church since 1947. Rucker was a past member of Rehobeth's Methodist Men and an avid fan of their softball team for 40 years. As a builder and contractor in the Greensboro and Durham area, he supervised the construction of the A& T Music Building and three local fire stations along with many residential homes. During WW II, Rucker served in the US Army Air Corps (9th Air Depot Replacement sqadron) from 1941-1945. He ranked Sergeant Crew Chief Mechanics on B-17's in England and France repairing damaged bombers. Rucker was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Juanita C. Castleberry and a brother John Benard 'JB' Crowder. Surviving are the love of his life, Virginia Barber Crowder, his daughters Janet Funderburk and husband John of Greensboro and Kathie Justice and husband Colonel Richard 'Dick' Justice US Air Force Retired of Baltimore, Maryland; granddaughters Jenni Lynn Hudson and husband Brad and Jaime Funderburk and special friend of the family Ryan Basinger both of Greensboro and Shannon Justice of Florida; two great-grandsons Landon Hudson and Michael David Shroeder; two sisters Marguerite Stogner and Bobbi White; a brother William Crowder and wife Edith and a sister-in-law Jenny York Crowder; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Sunday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service, 300 West Wendover Avenue Greensboro. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Perini for all of his special care over the years. They would also like to thank the special people at Britthaven Nursing Home for all their kindness and care.
