-- View a Video -- Shirley T. Mitchell Shirley Jean Thompson Mitchell, age 75, of Swansboro, N.C., previously of Greensboro and McLeansville, N.C., was called Home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday December 1, 2009 at Carteret General Hospital with her family by her side. She was born September 2, 1934 in Greensboro, N.C., the youngest child to the late Otis Cecil Thompson and Luna Inez Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Raymond R. Mitchell; sister, Mary Catherine Ziegler and husband Bob; brother, Robert J. Thompson; brother, Thomas E. Thompson and wife Jo. She was retired from A.T. and T. Telephone Company where she was a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers. When living in Greensboro, she was a member of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and later Calvary Baptist Church. Shirley is survived by her daughter Joy M. Brownlow and her husband Roy D. Brownlow, grandsons Tyler Mitchell Brownlow and Trevor Thompson Brownlow all of Emerald Isle, N.C.; son David R. Mitchell and wife Christina Norris Mitchell of Swansboro, N.C. who are expecting Shirley's next grandchild arriving in May; sisters-in-law Polly Thompson, Barbara Hodges, and Barbara Robertson; brother-in-law Frank Mitchell; brother-in-law Leon Robertson; and all of her nieces and nephews that she loved so much. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who loved the Lord with all her heart and walked in the light of the Lord. She was loved and cherished by so many people and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Cherished memories of Shirley will forever remain in our hearts. She was a faithful member of Cape Carteret Baptist Church where she touched many lives. She was known as 'Grandma Shirley' to many kids, teenagers, and adults in her community and always had time for a hug. She enjoyed attending church, gospel singings, school functions with her grandchildren, and watching her grandsons' baseball games. Shirley was a true example of what God does through us; she loved each and every one of us unconditionally and witnessed to others how to do the same. She would have us remember one thing: know Jesus; live, walk, trust and rest in Him. Visitation will be Friday, December 4, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Lambeth Troxler Funeral Home in Greensboro, N.C. and funeral service will be at 2:00 Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Lambeth Troxler Funeral Home.
