Obituary of Shirley Rizer Higgs

Mrs. Shirley Rizer Higgs of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Clifton Forge, VA., to Edward Theodore Rizer and Gladys Rusmiselle Rizer.

Mrs. Higgs retired from Hanes Corporation. She was an active member of New Friendship Baptist Church on Old Lexington Road where she served in many capacities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Percy Higgs; her parents; a brother; and two sisters. Surviving are her children, Ann Higgs Wilson and husband, Dale of Mocksville, and Thomas Gray Higgs of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Morgan Gillenwater (Wesley), Cody Wilson (Lauren), Hannah (Cody Lloyd), Landon, Mason, and Chloe Higgs of Winston-Salem; two great grandchildren, McKenna Gillenwater and Grayson Lloyd; two sisters, Nancy Rizer Williams (Edward) of Martinsville, VA, and Margaret Rizer Tunnell (Stan) of Matthews, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 6-8 pm at New Friendship Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at New Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chris Byrne officiating. The family requests you wear pink, Shirley's favorite color, to the funeral service.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
