Obituary of Jane Yates Lawson

Jane Yates Lawson, 85, of Greensboro, went home to be with her heavenly father on July 9, 2023.  Jane married David Arthur Lawson on February 17, 1961.

She was preceded in the death by her loving husband of 62 years.

Her son, David W. Lawson (Carolyn Lawson); Daughter, Sharen “Kay” Jackson (Mel Jackson); Grandson, Marcus Lawson; granddaughter, Miranda L. Owensby (Tim Owensby); Great-Granddaughter, Loreli S. Owensby; great-grandson, Dresden L. Owensby, three beloved sisters and two beloved brothers; survive her. 

Jane Lawson was a part of history working as a waitress at the lunch counter during the Greensboro Woolsworth’s Sit-in’s that started on February 1, 1960.  She was one to serve the first African American customer once her employers allowed her.  She later worked and retired from Wrangler Jeans after 36 years of dedicated service.  Jane was a dedicated member of Faith Freewill Baptist up until the day she passed. She was a pillar of the church and considered the matriarch; the one everyone looked to for advice and prayers.  She loved her family and God more than anything in this earthly world and is now united with her husband in Heaven.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm Friday, July 14, 2023 at Faith Freewill Baptist Church.  A visitation will be held from 1pm to 2pm prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens in Jamestown, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Freewill Baptist Church.
