Obituary of Janice Matthews Holder

Mrs. Janice Matthews Holder 85, of 3403 Wilshire Drive of Greensboro, passed away peacefully June 12th at Harmony of Greensboro.

Janice was born April 2, 1938 in Greensboro to Alfred Cullen Matthews & Rebecca Matthews. She was a faithful Christian her whole life and devoted to Jesus. She was a lifelong member of Florida Street Baptist Church and sang in the choir with her identical twin sister, Ruth Thomas. Janice remained as a loyal member of Florida Baptist Church up to the closing of the church and served on the finance committee and was part of the process to convert the church into a much needed home for Hope Academy school for children in the Glenwood neighborhood. After the closing of the church, Janice regularly attended Lawndale Baptist Church.

Janice graduated from Greensboro High School (Grimsley) and was a member of the women's swim team and then earned her degree at Women's College (UNCG). She later married Milton F. Holder and had two boys, Phillip Bryan Holder and Stuart Dale Holder. Janice had a long and successful career with the US Civil Service, working for many years with the Internal Revenue Service and then later with the US Marshals. Janice took great pride during her time with the US Marshals and created life long friendships with those who she served with.  After retiring from the Marshals office, Janice worked for many years at Macy’s department store at Friendly Center. Janice was an accomplished painter and loved to shag dance to beach music. Those who knew her always admired her sweet personality, her beauty and passion for fashion. Even at the end of life care, Janice showed grace and dignity as a resident of Harmony of Greensboro and the family would like to thank all the workers at Harmony and Hospice Authora Care for the great care and love they showed her every day. The family would like to especially thank Jan and Elizabeth Sapp who made it possible for her to extend her time living independently at her home as long as possible.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents, AC Matthews and Rebecca Matthews; twin sister, Ruth Thomas; brother, Buddy Matthews; her son Phillip Holder; and former husband Milton Holder.

She is survived by her son, Stuart Dale Holder of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Tammy Holder; four grandchildren, Chase Holder (wife Shannon Holder),  Madison Holder Buck (husband Ward Buck), Stephanie Holder Kuykendall, and Matthew Holder; along with six great grandchildren with a seventh due in September.
