Obituary of William Howard Matthews

William Howard “AL” Matthews Sr., 82, passed away on May 28, 2023, at Summerstone Health and Rehab in Kernersville. A native of Kernersville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Thomas and Corrie (Arrington) Matthews and husband of Nannie Rose Matthews.

He loved NASCAR racing and keeping up with current events on the news. He was a dedicated member of Teamsters 391 Union. Spending time with his family brought him great joy.

William is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, children, Jackie Austin (Debbie), William “Billy” Matthews Jr. (Fiancé, Tina Snider),6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great- great grandchildren: a sister Elsie Futrell and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 siblings and one step- son Thomas Wayne Austin.

The family will receive friends at Pierce- Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday June 1, 2023, from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM. Funeral services will be at 1:00PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jack Rose, officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory, Kernersville.
