Catherine Honeycutt

Obituary of Catherine Slate Honeycutt

Catherine Slate Honeycutt, 70, of Winston-Salem passed away on October 9, 2022 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Winston-Salem. Born in High Point, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Bennie and Alberta Barber Slate and wife of Randy Honeycutt.

“I have often read that if a person has loved and been loved, then that person lived a life well lived. Well, Cathy had a natural inclination to love and act upon that love. I was blessed to have her for my wife for 28 years. I know I will never be loved again like she loved me and she knew that she was loved by me with all of my heart.”

In February of this year Cathy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a hideous disease that takes away so many of our loved ones. Through the eight months from her diagnosis until she passed, there were just a handful of days that she did not receive at least one card in the mail letting her know that she was in the thoughts and prayers of so many people. Flowers and meals arrived at her home weekly. This went on for eight months. She would sometimes say she felt undeserving of so much kindness and Randy would reply, “What goes around, comes around.”

She was the most conscientious person that many people will have ever met. If you worked with her on a committee or otherwise, you knew that if she was involved, then things were going to be done right. To Cathy, doing something right meant going above and beyond what most people would do. Cathy worked closely with Randy in his career, demonstrating her professionalism and diligence in an office setting firsthand. She was intelligent, highly capable and someone that you would want on your team. For the majority of her professional career, Cathy worked in administration as one of the best around, but that’s not what those around her will remember about her. Instead, her beautiful smile, the twinkle in her eyes, and that wonderful laugh we all loved to hear will be remembered by those that had the opportunity to spend time with her. Cathy will be a favorite memory to so many people and her memory will bring forth a warm-hearted smile once the hurt has subsided.

Above all, she was a wonderful wife, mother, stepmother, nana, sister and aunt. She was our matriarch and helped to keep us moored to what was real and important in life. Cathy was a special daughter that cared for her parents in their old age alongside her two sisters. A nurse even commented on the amazing condition of her mother’s feet for her age, which resulted from Cathy’s care. Cathy would massage her mother’s feet with lotion weekly. Her Christian faith was strong and she believed she was here to serve others in need. Our faith teaches us that she is not really gone, just gone before us. When our grief seems too much to bear, this is what we hold onto as a family.

If there was a brighter side to her diagnosis, then it was the chance for what the family called “our long goodbye”. There were many difficult times during those eight months, but also countless sweet and tender moments as they made this final journey together. Cathy’s passing has left a big, empty hole in the family’s lives, but they will climb out of that hole and go about life as stronger and better human beings having had their lives touched by Cathy.

Catherine is survived by her husband, Randy Honeycutt; her son, James Sczudlo; her stepson, Philip Watson and wife, Jennifer; her grandchildren, Addison and Kaide; her sisters, Carol Corum and husband, John, Connie Kirkman, and husband, Roger; her nephews, Will Corum and wife, Kristi, Daniel Corum and wife, Christina; and seven great nieces and nephews.
