I worked with Sue at Elon for the entire time she was here. I managed Elect Dept, then Utilities Dept, then Maintenance Control Manager and the last couple of years as a Maintenance Engineer in my last role here. I am so sad to hear of Sue's passing. We had many conversations over the years. I was the Physical Plant Social media manager for many years working with students who she dearly loved to work around. A student and I (Genesis Milton) did an interview with her for Facebook in 2014. I wanted to honor her memory by posting that interview. She was quite the single mom and loved her family and the students/faculty she so ably looked after
: Get to know us at Physical Plant! Each week this summer, we will be showcasing some of #Elon’s long standing Physical Plant Employees.
This week it is 29-year veteran Sue Walker. Here is more information on her life:
Q- Tell me what you do here.
A- I clean West and Virginia dorms.
Q- What general changes have you seen here at Elon?
A- Elon is growing fast. There have been lots of additions and new buildings since I've worked here.
Q- What Buildings have been assigned over the years?
A- I've worked in Alumni Gym, Moseley Ctr, Fine Arts Ctr, Sloan, and now West and Virginia. I've worked
at each of them for several years.
Q- What is your favorite thing about working here?
A- Just getting to interact with the students, talking with some of the students that stay in the dorm. The students are
really sweet and always speak to me and ask how my day is going.
Q- What is your favorite thing to do after work?
A- I like to rest and spend time with my children and grandchildren.
Q- What things do you like to do with them?
A- Well my grandchildren like to come to my house with their game systems and play. I like to cook for them while they're
at my house.
Q- Favorite food they like you to fix?
A- My grandson always orders biscuits and sausage gravy when we're out, so I cook that for him because I know that's his favorite.
Q- What do you like to do for yourself in your spare time?
A- I like to read books when I can. I enjoy reading Christian books and mysteries.
Q- What is your best memory about working here?
A- I've met a lot of people. When I worked over at Danieley Ctr years ago, I met John Walsh and his wife when their
daughter was a student here.
Q- Tell me more about John Walsh and what connected you to him?
A- He is the host of America's Most Wanted. I've met a lot of important people working here, but he and his wife were so kind to me and were helping their daughter move in just like any other parent.
Q- Hidden talents...?
A - No, not really. I just enjoy being a mother and a grandmother. That's a job in itself. I do enjoy cooking for my kids and grand-kids when they come over.
Cooking, crafts, flowers, decorating home, etc.
Q- Favorite Vacation spots?-
A- White Lake, Mountains- Gatlinburg(love the scenery- see God’s handiwork). We always go together as a family.
Q- Elon people that you have connected with?
A- Buddy Evans(Environmental) who has worked many years and started off working with me. He is a great family man. He worked 5 jobs at one time.
I respect him for that. My daughter, Patti Walker, also works here in Alamance building
Q- Anything else you want people to know about you?
A- Well, I spend a lot of time with my children and grandchildren. I was a stay at home mom for a long time when I raised my kids, and we enjoyed our family time together. You don't need a lot of money to spend quality time together. I remember my son wished we had a grill to cook out with – so I put some bricks together, took the shelf out of the oven, bought some charcoal and made we grilled out in the yard. Ultimately, children want a part of you.
Thank you Sue for your dedication, may your life continue to speak to those you touched!
