Obituary of John Gurney Newman

John Gurney Newman, 76, passed away October 5, 2018 at Beacon Place Hospice Home in Greensboro.

A Gathering of Friends will be held from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Services Chapel.

John was born April 25, 1942 in Leasburg, NC to the late Wilma Coward and William Jennings Newman.  In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Betty Newman Hodges.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, William Hastings Newman and wife April Southard Newman; daughter Elizabeth Newman Applewhite and husband Charles Woodard Applewhite.

John was a survivor of the “Miracle of Hickory” in 1944, which was a polio outbreak that affected hundreds of families in the area.  The town built a special hospital almost overnight to treat the children.
