Obituary of Opal Bass

Mrs. Opal Poteat Bass, 84, of Summerfield, passed on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, February 7, at Lakeview Memorial Park by Dr. James Talbert. Opal was born in Guilford County on March 16, 1924, the daughter of Allen W. Poteat, Sr. and Annie Shores Poteat. She was formerly employed with Lorillard Tobacco as a secretary. Opal was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who loved her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garld T. Bass; a daughter, Gloria Ann Bass and three brothers, Allen Poteat, Jr., Otis, and Worth Poteat. Surviving are her son, Gregory Thomas Bass, Sr. (Teresa) of Raleigh; two sisters, Joan Lee (Leonard) of Summerfield and Kathleen Busick of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Gregory Thomas Bass II, Melissa Ann Bass, Alicia Brooke Gurley and Zachary Lyle Gurley, all of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews and her faithful friend, "Abby".
