Obituary of Lolene Ruth Canada Matthews

Our sweet mother, Lolene Ruth Canada Matthews, age 99 passed peacefully to her heavenly home on Sunday June 9, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born on February 5, 1925, to Elmer Henry and Ruth Hines Canada. She was a graduate of Sedge Garden High School where she loved playing basketball for 4 years. She married George Hugh Matthews on December 20, 1947. They had two daughters, Carrie Alana and Beverly Denise. Lolene was widowed at the age of 37 leaving her with two young daughters to raise. She worked hard to accomplish this task and instilled strong values and work ethics. Lolene was a lifetime member of Friedland Moravian Church where she enjoyed her Willing Workers Sunday School Class, helping prepare for communion and many years of serving as a diener for Lovefeast. She made sure her daughters attended also and participated in all youth activities.

Lolene was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She also loved to work outside.

She is survived by her daughters, Alana Matthews and Beverly Martin; grandchildren, Christen Wilson (Chip), Lauren Martin, and Aaron Motsinger (Emily); and great granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Motsinger with a Baby Motsinger on the way. She adored her grandchildren & great grandchildren, and they loved her.

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Canada and Edith Rice; brother, Dale (Glenda) Canada; and brothers-in-law, Eddie Matthews and Terry (Anne) Matthews; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lucille and Fleta Canada, Ethel (IJ) Nelson, Roger (Ruby) Canada, Neal (Jackie) Canada, and Bobby Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

Many, many thanks to Brenda Williams who helped with Lolene’s care for many years. She has brought much sunshine to our lives.

Our mother was a kind and loving child of God, a wonderful mother, friend and helper to many.

We praise “God from whom all Blessings flow” for her life and her love.
