William Dillon

Obituary of William Vernon "Rudy" Dillon

William Vernon “Rudy” Dillon passed away peacefully at his home on May 13, 2022, at the age of 79.  Rudy was born to the late Roy and Jeannette Dillon and lived in Colfax for most of his life.

Rudy graduated from Colfax School in 1961 while taking drafting and architecture classes at the former Guilford Technical Institute. He worked for Kaiser Roth, Thomas Buses, operated Texaco at Guilford College, and retired at age 54 after 25 years of employment with Southern Bell. He farmed tobacco and various crops for many years alongside his former wife, Linda, their three children, and countless family members and friends.

Rudy was blessed with many dear friends and neighbors over the years, whom he was always more than happy to lend a helping for. Time with the “Greensboro” friend group on Lake Norman was full of laughter and precious memories. He never failed to teach an eager learner how to water ski. He also enjoyed years of camping and horseback riding. He developed a love for the coast, where he loved to drive the boat and spend his days fishing. If he didn’t catch dinner, he knew where to find the best local fish market. He always loved to cook but valued the company of those that came to eat even more.  He was a jack-of-all trades and a wealth of knowledge on many things. Even near the end of life, he planned a large garden and oversaw the entire planting process from his hand-built sunroom. His children and friends were blessed to spend the last few months reminiscing and soaking up more knowledge from him, which will help carry them through the times of no longer having him.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Kathy; his brother, Bill Dillon (Jeannette); his three children, Deanna Dillon (Todd), Vic Dillon (Terri), and Marc Dillon (Carolyn); six grandchildren, Hannah Hoxworth, Summer Bowers, Dalton, Connor, Cameron, and Caison Dillon; two step-grandchildren, Abby Nelson and Leslie Winterfeldt; two great grandchildren, Lillie Bell and Levi Bowers; and three step-greatgrandchildren, Caleb and Kinslie Winterfeldt, and Audrey Nelson.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Gary Booher, Rudy’s longtime best friend and go-to guy. There aren’t enough words to describe what he means to the family.  Special thanks and love to Dennis and Teresa Robinson, RJ and Tammy Reynolds, and the countless other friends who stopped by  to lend a hand and share their time.  The family is forever grateful for the wonderful care and support he received from Bobbie Euliss with Fresenius Kidney Care and the wonderful staff from Hospice (especially Paige and Mary), who worked together to give us time with him we never expected.

The family will greet friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM Monday, May 16, 2022 at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services Kernersville Chapel.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Donna Friddle, Rev. Kelly Crissman, and Vernon Farrington officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
