Cmdr. (Ret.) Richard Martin, USNR

Obituary of Cmdr. (Ret.) Richard "Dick" Martin, USNR

Cmdr. (Ret.) Richard “Dick” Martin, USNR, 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Dick grew up in Lancaster, PA and never lost his love of the Lebanon Bologna and Shoo Fly Pie he was raised on. He graduated from Albright College with the intention of being a Forest Ranger until the day the Navy caught his eye and Dick found his calling.

Dick proudly served our nation for over 20 years at numerous duty stations including tours aboard the USS Spiegel Grove and The USS Peoria.  Cmdr. Martin retired to Kernersville after serving as the Commanding Officer of the US Naval Readiness Reserve Center in Greensboro, NC.

Dick was the kindest, most generous man you could meet, yet never lost his mischievous nature and sharp wit. He will be dearly missed by many close friends and family who will always remember him for his optimism in the face of adversity. Despite being paralyzed from a stroke for over 25 years, he never gave up hope that he would one day be able to drive again. Every day, he said he was “better and better”. That optimism carried him through many adversities.

Cmdr. Martin is survived by his son, Kent Martin; daughter, Meredith DiCostanzo (Joe); grandsons, Kent and Zach DiCostanzo; as well as his former wife and still dear friend, Camille Simmons (David).

A service will be held on Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00am at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, where Dick has been an active member for over 40 years.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
