Obituary of Dr. S. Leo Record, Jr.

Dr. S. Leo Record, Jr., 83, stepped into heaven on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral service celebrating his life will be held 1:30PM Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Kernersville Wesleyan Church with Pastor Scott Simmons officiating.

Dr. Record was born on June 16, 1934 to the late Bernice and S. Leo Record, Sr. in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Phillips High School in Birmingham, Alabama, and then attended South Pilgrim College in Kernersville, North Carolina. Leo continued his education with Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed his residency at Lloyd Nolan Hospital in Fairfield, Alabama.

Leo received his first draft notice during the Vietnam War in 1967. Before he entered into the military, many Kernersville residents wrote letters pleading for him not to be drafted, so he could remain at home to provide much needed medical care to the Kernersville community. However, while going to Vietnam was not his desire, it became the most pivotal experience of his life. Though he considered his service in Vietnam a challenging and terrifying trial, he eventually discovered that God had a plan for this time. He was able to spread the gospel to the Vietnamese people through the ministry of his medical profession. He accomplished this mission through the Southern Baptist Ministries and the Missionaries Sam and Rachel James. Leo proudly served his country as a Medic in the United States Army. During his time with the military, Leo received the Bronze Star, along with the Army Commendation Medal.

He was a devoted longtime member of Kernersville Wesleyan Church where he served many years on the church board, at times as a vice-chairman and treasurer. He considered his highest honor to be his service as a Sunday school teacher for 53 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Record.

Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 61 years, Marietta Record; son Dr. Charles Record and wife Kristi; daughter Anita Baughman and husband Bud; son Glenn Record and wife Julia; grandchildren, Carmen R. Moody and husband Jonathan, Brooks Record and wife Amanda, Alex Kursonis, Anderson Kursonis, Nicolas Kursonis, Palmer Record and wife Katherine, Alyson Record, Tanner Record and wife Kendall; great-grandchild, Caleb Record; sister Jane Blair; step grandchildren, Brandon Baughman, Brianna Garrison husband Ben and step great grandchildren, Maddie and Reagan Garrison.

The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Kernersville Wesleyan Church.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations to Victory Mountain Youth Camp, 1701 Westchester Drive, Suite. 300, High Point, NC 27262
